QR-Connected Trails: A Progressive Web App for Manang Ngisyang’s Tourism Experience
Manang Ngisyang, a rural municipality nestled in the highlands of Nepal, is home to sacred monasteries, alpine lakes, majestic mountains, and cultural treasures. While the region attracts thousands of trekkers and pilgrims annually, information access remained fragmented and inconsistent, particularly for travelers unfamiliar with the area or its history. Most visitors had no digital reference to learn about places in context, and the lack of infrastructure to deliver real-time, location-specific content limited the tourism experience. The local government needed a modern, installable, and multilingual platform that could scale with its long-term vision for tourism while being lightweight enough for remote, internet-scarce regions.
We partnered with Manang Ngisyang Rural Municipality to design and develop a Progressive Web App (PWA) that serves as an interactive tourism companion accessible both online and offline. The platform allows users to read and listen to curated content about the region’s sacred temples, breathtaking lakes, ancient monasteries, and iconic mountain trails.
Each tourist location in the region now features physical QR signage, which, when scanned, brings visitors directly to a page with contextually relevant audio and textual information available in multiple languages. The app also integrates practical information such as emergency contacts, ward office details, and service points, making it a reliable and helpful tool for travelers.
Designed with offline-first principles and installability across devices, the PWA transforms how tourists explore Manang bridging digital infrastructure with cultural preservation and visitor empowerment.
