Urban areas like Kathmandu face a growing range of complex challenges—ranging from traffic congestion and waste management to infrastructure planning and citizen service delivery. Despite the growing need for innovation, traditional governance structures often lack mechanisms to systematically tap into the creativity and technological potential of youth and startups.
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) sought to bridge this gap by engaging innovative minds from across Nepal to co-create technology-driven solutions for urban problems using Kathmandu as a pilot. However, this required a structured platform to encourage participation, guide innovation, and align ideas with real-world municipal needs.
To address this need, we supported the design and implementation of the Smart Urban Technology Challenge (SUTC)—a flagship initiative of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) aimed at empowering youth innovators and technologists to solve urban problems through modern technology.
SUTC served as a competitive and collaborative platform that:
- Encouraged entrepreneurial thinking among Nepalese youth.
- Crowdsourced tech-based solutions to address pressing urban issues in areas such as transportation, waste management, public health, and municipal services.
- Provided mentorship, funding, and municipal collaboration opportunities to help participants refine and implement their ideas.
- Used Kathmandu’s urban landscape as a real-world pilot for solution testing and impact demonstration.
By fostering innovation at the intersection of technology and urban governance, SUTC helped catalyze a new wave of civic tech entrepreneurship in Nepal—one that is grounded in local context and aligned with municipal development goals.
