Redesigning Open Nepal: Aligning Platform Purpose with a Growing Community Movement
Open Nepal is a long-standing initiative promoting data openness, digital rights, and civic participation and was undergoing a fundamental shift in direction. From a platform focused primarily on content and advocacy, it was evolving into a community-driven movement centered on grassroots engagement, collaboration, and collective action. However, its existing website no longer reflected this transformation. The structure was content-heavy and static, with limited space to showcase real-time activity, community initiatives, or the dynamic energy of its expanding network. It also failed to communicate the newly developed Open Nepal Manifesto, which redefined the platform’s goals and values. There was a pressing need for a redesigned digital presence that could embody Open Nepal’s new identity, grow its community, and support active participation.
We partnered with the Open Nepal team to redesign and redevelop their website from the ground up, creating a digital home that reflects their renewed mission and growing community ecosystem. Our process began with aligning the information architecture and visual language to the principles outlined in the new Manifesto - openness, inclusiveness, and collective empowerment.
The new website was designed to be community-first: it highlights stories from the field, showcases ongoing initiatives, and encourages user interaction. Clear pathways were created for users to learn, engage, and contribute, whether by exploring community events, discovering partner work, or joining thematic groups. We also ensured the platform was mobile-friendly, accessible, and easy to update, enabling Open Nepal’s team to continually share new developments and spotlight community members.
The result is a vibrant, purposeful digital platform that not only communicates Open Nepal’s vision but also catalyzes action, inviting more individuals and organizations to be part of an open, equitable digital future for Nepal.
